Yoga studio — “can I even do this with my back?”

What this call demonstrates

The call where the most important question goes unanswered — and that is the right answer. Whether someone with a herniated disc should do yoga is not for a front desk to decide, let alone an assistant. What it does instead: say what exists, hold a place, arrange a callback — and state out loud what it is not writing down about a medical history.

How it endsHeld a place in the back-care course, teacher calling back Saturday morning.

The business, the caller and the conversation are invented — no real company, and no recorded call. The transcript is scripted text and runs entirely in your browser.

The call, turn by turn

These calls are scripted and run entirely in your browser. There is no telephony connection. Where a recording is on file, it is played from our own server; otherwise the reading voice built into your device takes over — that one sounds very different from device to device, and it is not the sound of the assistant.

  1. Phone system

Incoming call from (802) 555-0148 — diverted after four rings. Evening class until 8:45 p.m.

  2. Assistant

Linden House Yoga, good evening. I take a short note as we talk — just say if you would rather I did not. What can I do for you?

  3. Caller

Hi. I wanted to ask — I have had back trouble for two years. Herniated disc, lower back. Can I even do this?

  4. Assistant

I cannot tell you that. Honestly — somebody would have to see you first. What I can do: tell you what we run, and have Miriam call you tomorrow. She teaches the back-care course.

  5. Caller

    Yes, that would be good.

  6. Assistant

The back-care course runs eight weeks, Tuesdays at six. The next one starts on the sixth of October. Small group, twelve people at most.

Schedule — back-care course, eight sessions, starts Tuesday October 6, 4 of 12 places open

  7. Caller

And if there is something I cannot do?

  8. Assistant

Then you do not do it. Miriam shows two or three ways through every pose. And she asks at the start of each session how the back is that day.

  9. Caller

    Okay. What does it cost?

  10. Assistant

A hundred and eighty dollars for all eight. Mats and blocks are here, you bring nothing.

Price list — back-care course, eight sessions, reduced rate on proof

  11. Caller

Good. I would like to do that.

  12. Assistant

I will hold a place. It only becomes firm once you have spoken to Miriam. What is your name?

Hold — October 6, back-care course, provisional until the callback

  13. Caller

    Anna Reeve. R-E-E-V-E.

  14. Assistant

Thank you. About your back I am writing nothing further down — only that you want a callback. The rest you tell Miriam yourself. Tomorrow between ten and twelve, on this number. Does that work?

  15. Caller

    Yes, that works. Thank you.

  16. Phone system

Note filed, callback in Miriam Vogt’s calendar. Call length: 2:41.

Note handed to the business

Caller
(802) 555-0148 — Anna Reeve
Request
Starting out with back trouble. Asking whether it is suitable.
Not answered
Whether yoga is advisable for her condition. The assistant says nothing to that — not even “plenty of people with a disc do this”.
Held
Back-care course from October 6, provisional. Place 5 of 12.
Callback
Miriam Vogt, Saturday between 10 and 12
Stored
Name, number, course wanted. Nothing in the note about the disc — only that a callback is wanted.
If the course is full
Then the assistant says so and names the following start date. It does not hold a place in a course that has none.

The question the caller opened with is still open at the end — and that is the point. An assistant that answers “can I do this with a herniated disc?” with anything reassuring is a liability case in a pleasant voice. This one says what it does not know, holds a place, and arranges the callback with the person who can judge it. That it also says out loud what it is NOT recording about her medical history is not a detail: someone who tells you about their back is entitled to know where that ends up.

Playback is condensed. The timestamps are those of the call itself.
