Basket and checkout

Five steps, and the last one says what it does.

Before an order is placed, the items, quantities, unit prices, shipping cost, total price including sales tax and the delivery day sit on one page underneath each other.

The way through the checkout

  1. Check the basket

Per line: quantity, item price, unit price and subtotal. Chilled and ambient goods are listed separately, because that decides the route. If the $35 minimum for chilled shipping is not met, the basket says how much is missing — not just that something is wrong.

  2. Address and delivery day

Delivery address, billing address, and the delivery day to choose: Wednesday or Friday. The week does not stretch further. We do not offer delivery to a neighbor for chilled goods, and that is said here rather than in the terms.

  3. Choose the shipping method

Chilled shipping $9.90, free above $80. Ambient goods on their own: parcel shipping $4.90. Collection at the kitchen on Thursdays, 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM, with no shipping cost and no minimum order.

  4. Choose how to pay

Four payment methods. What each one costs and what it requires stands next to it — in the row where you select it, not in a footnote.

  5. Review and order

The last page shows it all together: items, quantities, unit prices, shipping, the total price including 7 % sales tax, the delivery day, and the note that the chilled lines cannot be returned. The button below says "Place order" — not "Buy now", not "Continue" — with the amount that will actually be charged right next to it. That click costs money, which is exactly why the figure has to be complete before it.

Sample plans for the demo. None of them can be booked — the buttons deliberately lead nowhere here.

No payment method costs extra here. If one carried a surcharge it would be stated here and again in the order summary — a surcharge that only turns up in the final step is not one anybody agreed to.

What the order summary shows

The total price including sales tax, the shipping cost as a separate figure, and the sum of the two. Shipping carries the same tax rate as the goods, so a pure food order shows 7 % throughout.

The unit price per line. It does not disappear once an item is in the basket — that is precisely where you want to see it again when you are wavering between two sizes.

The delivery day, and beside it the sentence about the cold chain. Every chilled line also carries the note that it cannot be returned. That is not a tick box to click away, it is a sentence next to the item.

After the order goes through, the confirmation email repeats the same list, adds the return policy and the return form for the lines it applies to. Customers who ordered nothing ambient still get it — with a note about what it does not cover.

Questions about ordering

Why is the button worded so heavily?

Because it is accurate, and because the total sits next to it. "Buy now" or "Continue" does not tell you what the click does; "Place order", with the amount including shipping and sales tax right there, does. A figure the customer first meets on the card statement is where a sale turns into a complaint.

Can I order chilled and ambient goods together?

Yes, and then everything travels in the insulated box — one parcel, one shipping charge, one date. The $35 minimum then applies to the whole order, because the box is the expensive half of it.

What if I stay below the minimum order?

The basket says how much is missing and offers two ways round it: order ambient goods on their own by parcel, or collect on a Thursday. Neither has a minimum. What we do not do is take the order anyway and send a half-empty box.

When is the money taken?

Direct debit and card on the dispatch day, not the order day. With a bank transfer you pay first, and we only schedule the goods once it arrives — which usually costs a dispatch day. On invoice, 14 days after the invoice date.

Do I get an invoice showing the sales tax?

Yes, as a PDF with the dispatch confirmation. It shows the pre-tax amount, the rate and the tax amount separately — for businesses that need it for their books, and for everyone else as a record.
